Help Relieve your Child from Anxiety
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is a parent-based treatment protocol aimed at helping children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, OCD, and related issues. SPACE is an evidence-based treatment that aims to teach parents skills and tools that they can use in order to help their child overcome anxiety.
SPACE is designed to be a parent-only program, so in most cases, the child is not directly involved in the SPACE sessions. These sessions can be an ideal option for parents or caregivers of youth who are not motivated to engage in individual treatment or who are not benefiting from individual treatment alone.
SPACE was developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study center. You can read more about SPACE here.
This treatment approach emphasizes ways that parents can change their own behavior, rather than changing the child.
The primary areas of focus are 1) responding supportively to the anxious child and 2) reducing accommodations parents have been making in response to the child’s fears and anxieties. SPACE teaches parents to create specific plans to decrease these accommodating behaviors, which ultimately increases the child’s ability to cope with their anxious thoughts and feelings.
CBT Baltimore offers individual SPACE-based sessions and a SPACE group for parents of anxious children.
CBT Baltimore is excited to announce that we will be starting a SPACE group on February 23, 2022! The group will take place in 6 week modules. The group will take place on Wednesday evenings and each session will be 90 minutes long.
The group will be facilitated by the CBT Baltimore team led by Shmuel Fischler. The groups will take place in person at our Lutherville, MD office.
