Social Phobia, otherwise referred to as Social Anxiety, is a struggle that millions (about 15 million in the U.S.!) grapple with every day. It can present itself when having to ‘perform’ in front of other people (i.e. class presentation, public speaking, and even using a public restroom). Social anxiety commonly rears its head in social situations and creates a sense of dread and fear. Oftentimes it is difficult to notice to a casual observer because it can be chalked up to disinterest or being ‘shy’. This is unfortunate, in my mind, as it prevents us from validating the experience and helping those improve their quality of life. As a practice specializing in anxiety, we at CBT Baltimore work with numerous individuals struggling with Social Anxiety.
With that introduction, it should come as no surprise my level of excitement when coming across the National Social Anxiety Center (NSAC) website. They are an organization dedicated to educating both public and professionals alike in the area of Social Anxiety. They are up to date on the current research and utilize multiple platforms to disseminate their wisdom. Additionally, they are growing their ranks of regional clinics around the country that are well equipped to treat SA. NSAC is now in a position to guide people and their families to local resources nationally. We at CBT Baltimore are honored to have the opportunity of joining NSAC as the regional clinic in the Baltimore area. We sincerely hope that those who are in a battle with Social Anxiety will reach out and take that first step to relief and improve their quality of life.
