When we work with children and adolescents, we want to help parents and guardians through the process as well. At CBT Baltimore, we offer parent support and training because we believe that you play a pivotal role in your child’s treatment. As a parent, you’re able to offer a different perspective of the situation and give us valuable early behavioral and developmental history.
With our parent support and training, you will be able to:
- Teach skills that complement your child’s treatment
- Reinforce skills learned in therapy at home
- Provide support and behavior modeling
Respecting Your Child’s Autonomy
We do our best to give your child autonomy and allow them to decide how involved their parents are in their treatment.
With younger clients, we like to meet with parents prior to our initial assessment. This allows us to get your perspective and enables us to assess the appropriateness of treatment. Some young children cannot sit through the lengthy assessment process, so meeting with you first allows us to adapt the length of their own assessment too.
The SPACE Treatment Approach
At CBT Baltimore, we have many approaches we use, but we see many benefits when using the SPACE approach to teach parents skills and tools to help their child overcome anxiety, OCD, and related concerns.
The SPACE approach can help with:
- Fears and phobias
- Generalized anxiety
- OCD
- Panic disorder and agoraphobia
- Separation anxiety
- Social anxiety
SPACE stands for Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions. These sessions are solely for parents, teaching them how to change their behavior in order to become a model for their child. Throughout the treatment sessions, you will learn how to support your anxious child and reduce the accommodations you’ve made for your child’s symptoms.
The benefits of SPACE include:
- Flexible scheduling
- Minimal child participation
- No parent judgment
- Not punitive in nature
- A renewed sense of empowerment
- Skills learned are logical and intuitive
- Incentives aren’t necessary
- Parent-controlled pacing
